Resources for Building Inclusive Workplaces
Building workplaces that are inclusive of LGBTQIA+ people is vital in today’s economy. Not only is supporting LGBTQIA+ people in the workplace the right thing to do, but there has been a generational shift, with Gen-X and Millenial employees as a group expecting to work in LGBTQIA+ workplaces. Unfortunately, LGBTQIA+ people continue to experience barriers to advancement at work. Throughout the management pipeline, LGBTQIA+ people are under-represented, and LGBTQIA+ people in management positions often experience “onlyness” and alienation. This is particularly the case for LGBTQIA+ women of Color.
LGBTQIA+ people, particularly trans people, continue to report high levels of harassment and discrimination at work. This harassment and discrimination can lead LGBTQIA+ employees to remain “closeted,” however, staying closeted at work comes at a cost: LGBTQIA+ employees who are out and supported at work are happier, view their workplace more favorably, are more productive, and are less likely to leave their places of employment. Below are some resources for companies looking to build LGBTQIA+ inclusive workplaces.
